The BKB Buying Experience

I have a wealth of experience in buying cricket bats. I have owned over 15 in my short career and they have varied greatly from bespoke blades handcrafted to my specifications, factory made pre-sets that are churned out a hundred at a time, and even the odd piece of Kashmir Willow from Sports Direct. It’s fair to say I have had mixed success throughout my years as a punter, but one thing’s for sure, the stronger the investment, the better the results.

I have recently acquired a Black Knight Bat from father-son duo Bob and Jonny Lock. It is a bespoke blade made to my exact specifications. Previously, I have purchased a bat in this manner from little known Nottinghamshire company B3 and I can say that it is the best bat that I’ve ever owned. Until now.

Although there was a great level of communication and understanding from B3, they did not provide me with the knowledge and thoughtfulness that I received when corresponding with Bob. I first contacted BKB and explained my wish to have a blade that would allow me to play aggressively, late on in an innings. Something with a low, swollen sweet spot that would suit classical English wickets.

I thought that I was educated in the craftsmanship of bat making, however, it became clear to me that there were certain things that I’d never considered. Bob’s suggestion of a shorter bat, with a pronounced middle and bowed blade, meant that I could add another inch to the swell without adding to the weight. It ended up weighing in at a little over 2lb 10oz. The exact weight I asked for. The pick-up is beyond featherweight, it is almost as though I am only waving a handle, which is an oval base I might add, as requested. The blades balance is incomparable to any that I’ve owned before and with only some light knocking in, it is already flying.

The thing that surprised me most about the whole experience, was not the magnificent product that I’ve received, it is the unparalleled customer service that came with it. The bespoke bat that I bought from B3 in 2015, I’ve since tried to have recreated twice. On both occasions they have failed, sending me a completely unrecognisable blade. I felt as though my needs as the customer were being ignored and disregarded, whether through intention or ignorance I’m not sure. But with Black Knight Bats, the conversation made me feel understood and valued as a customer, providing me with thoughtful suggestions, and ultimately, with the excellent product that I am now the proud owner of.

This is an experience that I feel is integral when a customer is parting with the substantial amount of money that great cricket bats now cost. It is the basis and the basics of creating a successful business model in this industry, and there is no question in my mind that Bob and Jonny have nailed this aspect at Black Knight. The entire experience was a joy from beginning to end and without doubt I will be returning to this marvellous company in the future.
